Why I Write

I write because you told me to. I write because it is required. I write because she told me to. I write because they say I need to know how. I write because he told me to. I write because people tell me that is a skill you need in the world. I write because they told me I needed to improve. I write because they said “it could use a little work.” I write to tell them I’ve got all the skills I need. I write because who are you to tell me what I need to do? I write because I’ll prove them all wrong. I write resisting authority. I write because I don’t want to follow the rules. I write about what I want to write about. I write because I feel inspired. I write because I’m going to tell you how I feel. I write in order to express to you that I’ll write when I’m good and damn ready. I write because no one can force me to.

I write because I need to. I write to express. I write because its easier to tell you how I feel. I write to open my mind to everyone. I write because I can’t stop. I won’t stop. I need it. I write because If I don’t, I’ll drown in the stormy sea of my own thoughts.

I write because now I’m caught. I write in a whirlwind, caught in the viselike grip of my words. I write because it strangles me and lets me breathe. I write because writing and I have an abusive relationship. It brings me up, puts me down, strengthens me, fails me, confuses me, clarifies, and all of the above.
